The Museum of Science travelling program visited the fifth grade to enrich their curriculum study of rocks and minerals. Click the picture to visit the museums site. To begin our mini-study of rocks we learned that there are many types of rocks, but there are three basic kinds of rocks; igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Small groups of students were given a unique rock to observe and test. They visited six different experiment stations to to test the rock for layers, acid reaction, if it could scratch glass, what size pieces make up the rock, and what minerals might be in the rock. Once they gathered all their information they looked at the characteristics of their rock, referred to a reference sheet and made an educated decision of what type it was.
