Together we created a short comic about Rachel, who wanted to be popular (problem) but her laugh, which started as a giggle and ended as a snort, prevented her from becoming popular. As we generated ideas, Stephen talked through and drew the story and characters.
Watching Stephen draw with such ease was amazing. We were lucky that he then shared some of his "tricks". He uses only three basic shapes to draw; a circle, square and triangle. Students gave it a try and drew along with Stephen and realized that they could all draw some terrific pictures too.
To wrap up the Skype we watched Stephen draw Mal carryng a huge ice cream cone and asked questions about his process and inspiration.
If you want to read some of Stephen's comics or learn how to draw Mal or Chad, he gives a tutorial, visit his site at http://malandchad.com/
It really was a fabulous visit. He has inspired us to use our imaginations, read daily and practice drawing. Thank you, Stephen!
Below you can watch the Book Trailer for Belly Flop. It was named one of the best children’s books of 2012 by Kirkus Reviews! Congratulations Stephen!!
