Goals are not meant to be easy,
goals are to be inspirations
and dreams
to become a better
YOU.

With a new year, people often make resolutions. In our classroom, however, we use the term goal and we didn't wait for the new year, we started in September to make reading / school goals. Students were also encouraged to make personal goals for themselves.
I do, however, feel that it is a time of renewal, a time to reflect on our goals. In a recent blog I read I picked up two mantras that I think are worthy of introducing to the students to encourage enduring their goals:
Something is better than nothing; and
My pace is the right pace for me.
What often stops us from meeting a goal is an unrealistic expectation we set for ourselves. These are the times we must endure the difficulties and obstacles getting in our way, and think "something is always better than nothing." I am a believer that when you set yourself a specific, measurable and reasonable goal you can accomplish anything.
We also must be kind to ourselves when we look at our progress.
I like this advice from Jon Acuff:
Don't compare your beginning to someone else's middle. There will always be
someone who is faster, better, stronger, or who started the process months
ago. They are working at their pace; I am working at mine.
We have 6 months left in the school year to continue to work towards our goals, regardless we are all learning and improving ourselves as readers and people.
