- Reading often gets lost in the shuffle of summer activities such as camp, sports and vacation travel. Schedule a regular time to read and share books. Establish a regular routine to ensure reading becomes a priority.
- If you want to see a summer blockbuster movie that is based on a book, read the book first and then see the movie (DVD). Discuss the differences or similarities between the book and the movie.
- Create an outdoor reading area so the whole family can enjoy the summer weather and not feel stuck inside.
- Find books that are centered on summer activities you enjoy. If you like to go horseback riding (or sports or the ocean) find books about the topic or stories with your interest as an integral part of the plot.
- A great way to improve those non-fiction reading skills. Research and read about a trip or destination you are planning to visit this summer.
- Don't forget to pack a book wherever you go. Enjoy 30 minutes of reading on a comfortable chair or even floating on a raft when at the pool or beach. We all need down time to rest and relax.
- Find one at the public library, Scholastic or create one with your friends. A little friendly reading competition is always fun! friends
