Global Read Aloud Kick-Off
To prepare for the Global Read Aloud we watched a slide show on gorillas, and the book trailer for the book The one and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate. Based on what we saw and read we shared what we know and what we still wonder in addition to our predictions. Monday we Skyped with Ms. Thompson's class in Saskatchewan, Canada to share our predictions. Ms. Kilpatrick started to read aloud the story to both classes and Ms. Thompson read a few pages too. We are anxious to hear the story of Ivan living in the mall and what will happen.

Author Skype
We were so fortunate to be able to meet an author via skype. Laurel Snyder, author of Bigger Than a Bread Box was inviting, warm, funny, informative and inspiring. She shared her story of determination and perseverence through her writing career, her long time friendship with Sarah and the inspiration for Bigger than a Bread Box. Students were able to ask questions of Laurel and she expressed her insights, reflections and ponders about her very own stories. I hope your children will share some details of the visit and share the excitement of meeting an author. It was a very success visit.
We are still reading the story of Rebecca and her experience with the bread box. We have had some thoughtful and wonderful conversations. It is difficult to close the book at the end of read aloud time, although we often sneak in a few extra minutes.
