With every new year comes nervous anticipation and lots of questions; what is school going to be like this year? Who is in my class? Who is my teacher? Is he/she nice, strict, loud, mean? Will school be harder than fourth grade? Will I have lots of homework? We sent you to our class website, so you can see the students who make up our class (click the Meet the Scholars button), meet your teachers, and if you navigate around the website you can get a sense of the learning that took place in our classroom last year. Of course, because our class this year is unique not all activities will be the same.
Reading is a BIG part of learning, and our fifth grade year. We read to learn, to understand, to empathize, to analyze, to grow and for pleasure. If you do not consider yourself a "reader" now, you will by the end of 5th grade. You can get a sense of the reading community we will become by reading watching a previous class video. (The paper the kids are proudly holding is the number of books they read in fifth grade)
School has not even begun and we are going to assign some homework for the first week of school. Ugh! I know, but it's not too much, really!
1. Bring in your school supplies.
2. Summer reading. Please bring the list of books you read and the completed story map you were
expected to complete.
3. Your favorite book. This can be any book that you love. Please be prepared to share why it is your
favorite book.
4. An independent reading book. If you are in the middle of a book you may bring that, or bring one
you would like to start.
Feel free to leave a comment to let us know about your concerns or excitement for the coming year. We can't wait to see you Wednesday, August 27th, the first day of school. Don't forget to bring your homework and a smile. :) Let's make it a great first day! See you soon.
Your anxious and excited teachers,
Ms. Kilpatrick
Mrs. Follett
P.S. Parents, please visit the "Parents Place" tab above to read a letter especially for you. :) Thanks.
