Create a Character Contest
In September's issue of Story Works, Gordon Korman has invited readers to create a character for him to use in a story. Students worked hard thinking and visualizing a character to meet the October 15th deadline. Ms. Kilpatrick mailed them off and now we wait to see, of the many entries he will receive from around the world, whose character he selects. In the mean time students have taken their character and started their own story. We have some creative and imaginative students in B023. We are looking forward to sharing our characters and stories once we have finished the long, but rewarding writing process.
TFK Magazine
Time for Kids (TFK) is a weekly children's magazine that is publish for the nine months school is in session. Students learn current news from around the world, in our nation, in science, in health, about celebrities and everyday people/students. Fridays we start our day reading the magazine, discussing the news and applying our reading strategies. We are becoming knowledgeable citizens of the world.
Learning & Practicing Main Idea
Knowing the main idea of a story or article helps readers understand the reading and the author's intentions. This week we have started to observe and examine photos to help us determine the main idea and details. We practiced with the pictures below. What do you see and think?
Election Time
Election Day is only 18 days away. We started to learn and discuss the process that leads to the presidential election. We have discussed, "Who Can Vote?', "U.S. Voting Laws" and how they have changed over the years. The remaining days we will be chatting about The Electoral College, political parties, the campaign, and lastly the President's job.
The Unsloved Mystery boot Camp
This week we learned steps to solving number stories that will help us be successful mathematicians. Thanks to "Inspector Sherlock", we also know key words to look for to help us plan and solve number stories..
Book Lottery
Each time a new book is added to the classroom library, Ms. Kilpatrick gives a book talk and shows a book trailer. One for the Murphy's is a book about a girl who loses everything, but finds family and love with the Murphy's. Is it happily ever after? Read it to find out.
When asked who would like to read it, more than half the class was interested. So. . . we put names in a jar and chose who could read it first. The rest of the students are on a waiting list. Pictured below is Henry, the winner of the Book Lottery! Congrats Henry.
